Good nutrition is an essential part of older adults' health, but preparing meals is sometimes too difficult or physically demanding for seniors who live alone or are caring for a loved one.

Mollie's Meals is the area's only provider of kosher home-delivered meals. The meals are freshly prepared in the kitchen at Weinberg Village and delivered by volunteers to recipients throughout Allegheny County.

Mollie's Meals makes deliveries three days a week, and brings clients two dinners at each visit. Clients can choose to receive meals on all or just some of those days and can specify if they would like one or two dinners with each delivery. The meals are chilled in containers suitable for reheating.

Who is Eligible
Anyone age 60 and older who resides in Allegheny County is eligible to receive meals.

You don't have to be sick to qualify for meals
The goal of the program is to keep seniors well and independent. People who are recovering from serious illnesses and injuries are also eligible for the program, regardless of their age, and can order meals for as short or long a period as they need.

Individualized service
Mollie's Meals makes special accommodations for individuals with special needs such as problems swallowing, chewing, or food allergies. Meals are prepared without additives. Sugar-free meals are also available. In addition, we give recipients the opportunity to request substitutions if they prefer other menu items.

Comfort food
Besides basic nutrition, Mollie's Meals menus are intended to provide comfort to clients. Menus are carefully planned to include ethnic favorites like stuffed cabbage and chicken soup, and to be as tasty as possible without additives.

Meals are prepared under the strict Kashruth supervision of the Vaad HaRabonim of Greater Pittsburgh.

Concern for the individual
The Mollie's Meals staff includes a licensed social worker who makes contact with all Mollie's Meals recipients. Upon request, the social worker can conduct a home safety evaluation and can arrange for home safety modifications if necessary.

The social work assessments can also help clients access other services such as physical rehabilitation, home healthcare, adult day services or counseling through the JAA or other local agencies.
