CEO Notes

What an inspiring and moving event!  On June 3rd we amassed another incredible class of Eight Over Eighty Honorees.  The Pittsburgh Jewish community is blessed to have such devoted and skilled octogenerians right in our backyard.  As I read their biographies, and listened to their words, I could not help but be overwhelmed by all that they have accomplished and by the legacy they continue to leave for the rest of us.

The evening's honorees reflect the  mission of the JAA  in their constant attempts to be the best that they can be.  We too, along with the support of many of our partner agencies, such as the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh (formerly the United Jewish Federation), the United Way, and the Ladies Hospital  Aid Society, strive to maintain a level of excellence for our residents, our clients, and their families.

Our gratitude is extended to these eight individuals who have allowed us the priviledge of recognizing them, proving that age in no way limits one's abilitiy to give back to society.

Congratulations to: Professor Joe Eaton, Ruth Ganz Fargotstein, Irene Jacob, Rabbi Walter Jacob, Judge Lawrence W. Kaplan, Dr. Bernard Klionsky, Estelle  Kruman, and Sam Weinreb

Department News

Council Care's Irving Spolan Center offers the best in Adult Day Services for frail, mentally and physically impaired older adults. Each day clients are provided with nursing and personal care services as well as meals, rehabilitative programs and vital activities. Life offers us many treasures.  Here at Council Care, our teasures are our consumers and family members.  We have been blessed by many supportive families and here are some kind words of gratitude.

Dear Council Care Staff:

How can we ever begin to thank you?  We believe that Council Care- her committment to "school" and your special attention to her, kept her alive these past few years.  She relished being with her "day" friends doing crafts, listening to music and enjoying coffee and toast in the mornings.  You all became her family and Council Care was her second home.  I don't believe we could have done it without you, so we are very grateful.

The Family of Ellen Kerber

Announcements

As part of a national branding effort by the Jewish Federations of North America the name of the United Jewish Federation has been changed to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.  The implementation of the transition plan to this new name will take place until mid summer.

We commend Michael Smith, Director of JAA Home and Community Services for his recognition by The United Way of Allegheny County as a successful Employee Campaign Manager for the 2009-200-10 campaign.  "Michael planned and executed an exemplary campaign for the JAA effort."

Our annual Eight Over Eighty event was once again a phenomenal success thanks to the tireless efforts of many people.  This event could never take place with out the countless hours of devoted planning made by Jen McCay, Sharyn Rubin , Guy McAllister and his marvelous staff, and our Chair Milt Eisner and Honorary Chair Bobbee Slotsky-Kramer.

From Our Rabbi

A Rabbi had a sign posted above his door:

If you have  problems, come in and tell us about them.  If you do not have problems, come in and tell us how you do it.

We all have problems and issues.  with G-d's help, we are able to deal with them.  It helps to talk to others, especially our spiritual leaders and friends.  Sometimes, the answer to our prayers is that we are able to meet and talk with others who understand what we are going through, that in itself is an immense relief.

I pray that Hashem should help all of us to deal with the issues we have, and should help us also to share the answers we find with others in similar situations.  Shalom.

Shalom and blessings,
Rabbi Eli Seidman
