The decision to place a loved one in a skilled nursing facility
can be a difficult one.
When family members decide to place a
spouse, parent, or other relative in the Charles M. Morris
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, they can rest assured their
loved one will receive the best nursing care available in
an elegant, homelike setting.
Located on the Weinberg Village campus,
the atmosphere at the Morris Center is warm and inviting.
Designed with dignity and comfort in mind, this facility provides
housing and care for 159 individuals in primarily private
rooms, which are located on five nursing units. Each unit
has 30-35 residents, and includes its own dining and activities
areas. Some units have their own outdoor patios and gardens.
This contemporary cluster design fosters a close relationship
between staff and residents.
Excellent Care
The Morris Center has a reputation for excellent resident
care. Our staff, from nurses and nurse’s aides, to social
workers and activities staff, to our housekeeping and dietary
workers, all play a role in making sure that residents’
physical, emotional, and social needs are met.
Nursing
The Morris Center is staffed 24 hours a day by a corps of
extremely devoted, professional registered nurses, licensed
practical nurses, and nurse’s aides. The excellent care
they provide to residents is what distinguishes the Morris
Center among nursing homes of comparable size in this region.
The nurses work closely with attending
physicians to treat residents’ existing medical conditions
and to identify and treat emerging symptoms to prevent serious
illness. Through careful record keeping on residents’
charts and regular staff meetings, the nursing staff develops
a detailed care plan for each resident to make sure the resident
receives appropriate treatments and that all of the elements
of his or her care work together for the benefit of the resident.
The nurses at the Morris Center are able
to perform many skilled nursing tasks, such as IV therapy,
Enteral therapy, Ostomy and Wound Care. Several nurse’s
aides also have special training in restorative nursing, which
is designed to help residents maintain physical mobility and
dexterity. These nurses work in cooperation with the rehabilitation
services department to help residents maintain strength or
recover physical mobility that may have been lost due to an
illness or injury. Specialty beds and chairs in residents’
rooms also aid in the rehabilitation process.
Other special health care services include
diabetes education and monitoring, and an on-site health clinic,
which includes a laboratory, x-ray capabilities, dental clinic,
podiatrist, vision care and dermatological care.
Social Services
At the Morris Center we also carefully monitor the emotional
health of residents. When a resident is admitted, he or she
is welcomed by a social worker who helps the resident get
acclimated to the new surroundings. Periodically, the social
workers make visits to residents to make sure they are adjusting
well to the Morris Center, and to address social and emotional
needs.
Social workers are liaisons between the
facility and residents’ family members. They communicate
with families on a wide variety of topics, including insurance
and financial counseling, resident progress, facility practice,
and referrals, as well as end of life and grief counseling
when necessary.
Social workers monitor residents’
progress, mood, and behavior throughout the residents' stay
at the Morris Center, and may make recommendations to the
nursing staff based on observations of residents and interactions
with them. When residents leave the Morris Center to return
home, the social workers guide them and their families through
the discharge process, which can be a difficult transition.
Activities
Every day there are several activities in which residents
can participate, examples include:
- Exercise –
balloon volleyball, ball toss, and “Sit & Be Fit”
- Music Therapy –
music relaxation, sing-a-longs, and choir rehearsals and
performances
- Creative Arts and Crafts
– woodwork, embroidery, painting
- Entertainment –
movies, concerts, story-telling
- Special events –
monthly birthday parties, carnivals, softball games, holiday
parties
Dementia Services
The Allderdice Unit, one of the five nursing units, is specifically
designed for residents who exhibit moderate to severe symptoms
of dementia. Staff members on the unit are trained to care
for residents who suffer from memory loss and who may exhibit
difficult behaviors or a tendency to wander. To ensure residents’
safety, Allderdice is secured by doors that lock electronically.
On Site Rehabilitation
The Morris Center’s modern Rehabilitation Center offers
physical, occupational, and speech/language therapies to help
residents recuperate from injuries, improve their mobility,
and preserve their ability to independently perform activities
of daily living. These services are provided through a contract
with Aegis Therapies.
Resident and Family Councils
The Morris Center welcomes the input of residents and their
family members. Each month, residents are invited to a resident
council meeting, in which they can speak frankly about any
problems or concerns they may have with the facility. Family
members have the opportunity to participate in a similar family
council, which meets quarterly.
Cultural and Religious Atmosphere
We strive to create a spiritual atmosphere in which everyone
feels welcome and accepted. We observe all the Jewish holidays
and provide Jewish religious and cultural content in our regular
programming. Our food and nutrition department is certified
kosher by the Vaad HaRabonim of Pittsburgh.
