2018 ANNUAL REPORT 11 Monique Hurt doesn’t give a second thought as to how she wants to be re- membered. Leading by example, Monique (aka “Mo”) embodies the spirit of what it means to live a legacy, right here and now. The five-year certified nursing as- sistant and employee mentor loves her work at JAA, and it shows. Before joining JAA, Monique owned and operated a bak- ery. However, after caring for her beloved grandfather at the end of his life, she dis- covered her true calling – providing com- passionate care to seniors. According to Monique, “Legacy is about living a good life – being the best you can be and treat- ing all human beings with compassion.” MONIQUE HURT Care Staff Member “Payback” is the word 90-year-old Jean Rosenthal uses to describe her vol- unteer work at JAA as an office aide. Managing ongoing mailings is Jean’s way of thanking JAA for the great care her family has received at Charles Mor- ris over the years. Since 2005, Jean’s mother, sister, and husband have all received compassionate end-of-life care on JAA’s campus. “You cannot receive unless you give. Period. That is what legacy is all about,” she said. A Johnstown transplant, having worked in that city’s lone synagogue for many years, Jean feels right at home in Pitts- burgh’s robust and welcoming Jewish community. Bill Brandeis is not just leaving a lega- cy at JAA. He is living it. Celebrating 20 years of dedicated community service on JAA’s board of directors, Bill has seen JAA grow and thrive over the years. “The collective work that our board has contributed, and continues to do, is re- inforcing JAA’s place as a highly valued community asset for generations to come,” said Bill. “Supporting JAA has been personally challenging and deeply meaningful to me. My fervent hope is to leave JAA far stronger than when I joined it.” Bill’s numerous contributions have made a tremendous impact on JAA, and have solidified, for him, a lasting legacy of heartfelt service. Judy Blumenfeld is JAA’s consummate, veteran team player. For more than 40 years, she has served in an adminis- trative capacity, handling admissions and billing for Weinberg Village. Judy has often led tours on JAA’s campus, encouraging prospective residents and their loved ones to feel welcomed. Mak- ing connections and cultivating lasting relationships are at the heart of Judy’s work. She makes a positive impact every day because she truly cares. “Leaving a legacy is about caring – to consciously honor and remember our loved ones,” said Judy. “Establishing a fund in their beloved memory is a beautiful way to keep them alive in our hearts.” JEAN ROSENTHAL Volunteer BILL BRANDEIS Board Member Emeritus JUDY BLUMENFELD Office Staff Member
