Rabbi Small’s Monthly Message: August ’25

We have entered the Hebrew month of Av, during which we commemorate two important days: the 9th of Av (Tisha B’Av) and the 15th of Av (Tu B’Av). Tisha B’Av is a solemn day in the Jewish calendar that marks the destruction of the Jewish Temples in Jerusalem. It is a day of mourning and reflection, but is also an opportunity for us to rebuild and become more resilient from difficult situations.

Soon after, on the 15th of Av, we celebrate a joyous day when many positive events took place. Our sages liken the significance of the 15th of Av to Yom Kippur. How do we reach such a significant place of goodness after such loss and difficulty? One answer can be found in one of the special events that took place on the 15th of Av, that marked the end of the annual cutting of firewood for the altars in the temple. It was so special because the people symbolically broke their tools to celebrate their achievement that was for a holy purpose. They worked hard for the sake of goodness, reached their goal, and could rest and celebrate their accomplishments.

This is the deeper message of this month of Av, which many also call Menachem Av, meaning being comforted in Av. While Av demonstrates that we can experience hardship, difficulty, and trials, it reminds us that with perseverance and hope we can emerge stronger.

At the JAA, we are familiar with this message. We overcome challenges, work toward our goals, and teach that with care, kindness, compassion, and good efforts we can become resilient and stronger together. Together with our residents, their families, and the community, we celebrate our accomplishments and are stronger together.

May we continue to be blessed in reaching blessings and sharing our blessings together with our community and beyond.
